The first phase of hair loss treatments begins with Propecia, a popular drug that’s been in business for decades, starting with Proscar. The drug is an effective treatment for male pattern baldness and an FDA-approved hair loss prevention treatment for men. But it’s time to learn what the FDA considers to be a serious safety concern, and what to do about it.
First, a quick review of the FDA website, followed by a look at the product information, as well as some of the other side effects that you might experience from taking Propecia.
“We were concerned about Propecia’s safety because of the warning that it’s not FDA-approved and because of concerns over possible side effects,” says, a physician who treats male pattern baldness. “It’s been found that Propecia can cause hair loss in some people, but there’s not enough evidence to support the safety of Propecia.”
When the drug first went on sale in 1997, doctors were not exactly sure whether it would work. Propecia had been on the market for decades, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it in 2010. Now, according to the FDA website, a hair loss warning was added to the drug label to alert doctors that it could cause birth defects in fetuses.
“The risk of birth defects was clearly raised and it was determined that Propecia could cause birth defects,” explains Dr. Michael Schulman, director of the National Center for Health Research and Education at George Washington University. “But these are very rare events, and if they occur, it is very important to immediately call your physician.”
While the safety of Propecia has not been established, Dr. Schulman says, it’s still possible that Propecia could cause birth defects in fetuses.
“I’ve never taken Propecia, and it’s not known how it might affect the developing fetus. It’s not known how Propecia could affect the developing baby, and we don’t know if it’s safe to use,” he says. “We’re not saying that it’s safe to use, but we still think it might be possible.”
In December, the FDA announced that it would soon begin a review process to evaluate Propecia’s safety for women who have been diagnosed with female pattern hair loss. If it’s safe to use, the FDA is still waiting to see if that safety issue will be addressed.
However, Dr. Schulman says, it could also cause birth defects in fetuses, since birth defects are genetic. And there are a lot of questions about whether Propecia could cause birth defects in the developing fetus.
“There are a number of concerns about the safety of Propecia that we have with Propecia, and those concerns are that the drug can cause a small life-threatening complication that could cause birth defects,” he says. “This is a rare condition that is not very serious, but it is something we’re doing.”
According to Dr. Schulman, it’s also possible that the drug might cause birth defects. “There are a number of potential birth defects that Propecia can cause in a developing fetus. It could be that the drug increases the amount of protein in the developing fetus, and that might cause a life-threatening birth defect,” he says.
In the meantime, Dr. Schulman says, “We do have a lot of questions that we need to answer, because it’s very important that there are no birth defects or birth defects in a pregnant fetus.”
Dr. Schulman says, “It’s not that there is any concern that the drug could cause birth defects in the developing fetus. There’s a lot of questions about the safety of Propecia that we have with Propecia, and those concerns are that the drug can cause a small life-threatening complication that could cause birth defects.”
Propecia, scientifically known as finasteride, is a medication approved by the FDA for the treatment of male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). It works by blocking the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone linked to hair loss, by inhibiting the production of the hormone by the body.
If you're using Propecia or any other medication, it's essential to follow your healthcare provider's instructions carefully. Men with hormone-dependent disorders, such as male pattern baldness, should not take Propecia, as it may cause permanent hair loss.
Propecia is available in two different strengths: 1mg (finasteride) and 5mg (finasteride). You should not use Propecia on an empty stomach as this can cause stomach irritation.
Propecia is not suitable for everyone, including those with certain medical conditions or those taking other medications. Consult your healthcare provider for guidance and adjustments if you have any questions or concerns.
